School-teacher advice can send an academic file in the wrong direction
Tertiary and academic roles are not the same as ECE, primary or secondary teaching. A school teacher normally starts with Teaching Council registration. A lecturer, researcher, professor-track academic, vocational specialist or tertiary educator usually starts with institution fit: the role advertised, qualification level, research or teaching profile, discipline need and employer sponsorship position. If your work is genuinely school teaching, check the teacher pathway. If it is tertiary appointment, build the case around the institution and the role.
Qualification comparability supports the appointment story
NZQA qualification assessment can help where a New Zealand institution or visa pathway needs formal framework comparison. For academics, though, a framework comparison is not the whole decision. The hiring body reads the masters or doctorate, subject field, publication record, teaching portfolio, supervision history, industry or clinical relevance where applicable, and whether the appointment makes sense at New Zealand level. Pakistan-trained academics often have strong credentials, but the file must be narrowed to the role being targeted.
Appointment evidence matters more than a broad CV
A broad academic CV can look impressive and still fail to answer the employer's question. New Zealand panels need to know what role you can credibly perform: lecturer, researcher, programme coordinator, specialist instructor, vocational tutor, postdoctoral researcher or professional-education academic. Appointment letters should name duties, contract type, dates, teaching load and research or supervision responsibilities. Publications, course outlines and references should support one role family rather than trying to prove everything at once.
Green List checking is still useful, but only after the role is named correctly
Many tertiary academic titles are not listed as dedicated Green List occupations in the directly checked INZ instructions. That does not close every pathway, but it means the role title and duties must be tested carefully. Use the Green List Checker for the exact occupation label and compare SMC points if Green List fit is weak or absent. Employer targeting only helps after the appointment target is honest; otherwise the applicant may chase jobs that cannot support the immigration story.
The practical cost is not only money, it is evidence time
Tertiary applicants may not need the Teaching Council registration budget unless their role crosses into school teaching, but they still need time and money for qualification assessment where required, certified documents, academic records, police and identity evidence, and employer-led immigration steps. The costly mistake is starting with a visa label before the academic appointment evidence is tight. For Pakistani applicants, the strongest commercial decision is to audit the file before employer outreach, not after a university asks for proof.

Direct answer
A Pakistan-trained lecturer, researcher or academic professional should not follow school-teacher advice unless the role is actually school teaching. Most tertiary academic pathways are institution-led, not Teaching Council gated. Your evidence must prove qualification level, research or teaching record, appointment fit and a credible occupation match before Green List, SMC or employer strategy is useful.
What not to assume
- Do not assume Teaching Council school-teacher registration is required for every tertiary academic role.
- Do not assume lecturer, professor or researcher automatically matches a Green List occupation.
- Do not assume a Pakistan university appointment translates cleanly without evidence of duties, dates, teaching load and research output.
- Do not assume employer interest solves immigration classification. The role title and duties still have to match a route.
- Do not assume the teacher roadmap is the right tool for tertiary academics. Use Green List, Job Intelligence and SMC comparison first.
What RTNZ would check before employer targeting
- Whether the target is academic appointment, vocational teaching, professional training, research or school teaching.
- Whether the qualification record is strong enough for the advertised academic level.
- Whether publications, teaching portfolio and appointment letters support one clear role family.
- Whether Green List, SMC or AEWV employer-led planning is the honest route.
- Whether a study, PhD, postdoctoral or further-qualification strategy is stronger than immediate skilled migration.
| Planning point | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Professional gate | Usually institution appointment, not Teaching Council school-teacher registration | The wrong registration pathway wastes time and weakens positioning |
| Qualification comparison | NZQA assessment may be useful where an employer or visa pathway needs framework comparability | It supports the file, but does not replace appointment merit |
| Green List position | Many academic titles are not listed as dedicated Green List occupations in the directly checked INZ text | The exact role title and duties must be tested before visa planning |
| Employer stage | Institution fit comes before employer targeting at scale | Generic outreach is weaker than role-specific evidence |
| Pakistan file risk | Broad CVs, vague appointment letters and unclear publication or teaching evidence | A focused academic story is easier for a New Zealand panel to read |
| Best-fit tools | Green List Checker, NZ Green List Job Intelligence and SMC Calculator | Tertiary pages should not push the teacher registration roadmap unless the role is actually school teaching |
| Evidence area | What to prepare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification record | Masters or doctorate certificates, transcripts and earlier degrees where relevant | Institutions benchmark level and discipline preparation |
| Research or teaching track | Publications, research outputs, teaching portfolio, course leadership or supervision evidence | Tertiary hiring reads for output and role fit, not generic seniority |
| Appointment history | Letters naming institution, role, duties, contract type, teaching load and exact dates | Immigration and employer matching depend on what you actually did |
| Framework comparison | NZQA assessment ready where an employer or visa pathway requires formal comparability | Formal comparison can support, but not replace, appointment merit |
| Employer target | A shortlist of roles that match one defensible academic identity | Focused targeting converts better than broad academic positioning |
| Immigration position | Current Green List and SMC position checked against the exact role target | Honest classification prevents false planning |
